Shea Lacey targeted by rival manager as England face battle for Man United wonderkid

Republic of Ireland manager Hallgrimsson has shown interest in Lacey, who qualifies through his father and has impressed for United this season.

England face a battle for the international allegiance of Manchester United wonderkid Shea Lacey. The 19-year-old has represented England from U15 to U20 level but qualifies to play for the Republic of Ireland through his father.

Lacey has impressed for United this season, making six appearances and providing an assist for Matheus Cunha's winner in Tuesday's 3-2 Champions League comeback over Roma. Those performances have caught the eye of Republic of Ireland boss Heimir Hallgrimsson, who acknowledged Lacey's Irish connection when asked about contact: "That would be for other guys in the association, but it was interesting looking at his Irish connection."

Manager Michael Carrick has also praised the winger's performances. "We love him to bits. He's a great young man, he's desperate to do well, he's got great ability," Carrick said. Lacey is expected to be included in England's U20 squad for upcoming matches against Czechia and Portugal in the U20 Elite League.
