"It gives me goosebumps": Zidane's emotion and tribute after Jesús de Miguel's death

Zidane paid tribute to Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel, who died this week after a collision with a goalkeeper during a match.

Zinédine Zidane expressed his deep sadness at the death of Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel, who died earlier this week following a terrible collision with an opposing goalkeeper during a match. Speaking at a press conference to announce his France squad for upcoming Nations League matches against Italy and Turkey, Zidane said he was "extremely moved" by the tragedy. "It gives me goosebumps. We don't want to see that on a football pitch," he said. "I'm especially sad for the family. I hope we never see that on a pitch again."

Although Zidane never faced de Miguel as a coach, he felt the tragedy personally given his deep connection to Spanish football. The entire Spanish football community has mobilized to honour the player. Real Madrid and Barcelona released statements of sympathy for his family. A fundraising campaign has already raised over €100,000, with all proceeds going to de Miguel's wife, son and parents. His funeral took place Thursday in Navahermosa, his family's village, attended by Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez and Spanish national team coach Luis de la Fuente.
