Manchester United have a new wildcard manager target with Michael Carrick sack decision imminent

Manchester United are weighing multiple managerial candidates including Howe, Nagelsmann, Conte and Stuttgart's Hoeness, with a decision on Carrick's future expected during the international break.

Manchester United are assessing their options for the managerial position amid uncertainty over Michael Carrick's future. Eddie Howe, long considered the frontrunner, is reportedly less highly regarded by the club than previously suggested. Julian Nagelsmann remains prominent but concerns persist over his relationships with players during his time with Germany, though recruitment chief Christoph Vivell backs him. Antonio Conte's experience is tempered by doubts about whether United's squad meets his demands, while a move for Didier Deschamps failed after the former France coach declined a return to club management.

former Stuttgart manager Sebastian Hoeness has emerged as a wildcard option, though his appointment would represent another significant gamble following Ruben Amorim's struggles. Brighton's Fabian Hurzeler is also under consideration but faces questions over replicating his success at Old Trafford. Cesc Fabregas at Como is considered unlikely, with Arsenal reportedly viewing him as a potential long-term successor to Mikel Arteta. A decision on Carrick's future is expected during the international break, with Sunday's match against Aston Villa potentially proving decisive.
