Manchester United manager search takes major twist as new Michael Carrick details emerge

Didier Deschamps has turned down the Manchester United manager's job; Carrick faces a crucial test against Aston Villa on Sunday with his position under review.

Didier Deschamps has reportedly rejected an approach to become Manchester United manager, according to multiple outlets. The 58-year-old, who left his role as France coach after 14 years and the summer World Cup, indicated he has no interest in the Old Trafford job at present and would prefer to wait for an opportunity next summer.

Carrick's position remains under scrutiny following an eight-game winless run, though Manchester United's 3-2 Champions League victory over Roma on Tuesday offered some respite. The club hierarchy is reportedly split on whether to replace him, with Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann among those linked. Sunday's visit of Aston Villa is seen as crucial before another review of the situation, with United sitting 17th in the Premier League after winning just one of their opening nine games.

United are not believed to be keen to appoint another interim manager if they decide to part ways with Carrick, who was given the full-time job in the summer after his success as caretaker in the second half of last season.
