Man United LIVE: Takeover update as preferred list of Michael Carrick replacements drawn up

Carrick stays in charge for Chelsea trip after board disagreement over replacement; job remains under threat.

Michael Carrick has been given a reprieve after Manchester United's hierarchy decided against sacking him following Monday's conference call. Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the Glazer Family, Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox opted to keep the 45-year-old in place despite United's 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth at Old Trafford last weekend, which had appeared to seal his fate. The board could not agree on a replacement, leading to the decision to allow Carrick an opportunity to reverse the club's poor form. Several United players are understood to want to support Carrick through the crisis. The club spent over £150m this summer, focusing heavily on midfield signings including Carlos Baleba, Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos, but added no new defenders.
