Man Utd unlikely to appoint interim should they sack Carrick

United would pursue a permanent replacement rather than another interim if they sack Carrick, with Nagelsmann, Hürzeler and Howe among targets.

Manchester United are unlikely to appoint an interim head coach if they decide to replace Michael Carrick in the coming weeks, Sky Sports News understands. While there remains support for Carrick within the club hierarchy, United's bosses have concerns about the team's direction and consistency despite Tuesday's Champions League victory over Roma—their first win in 10 matches.

Carrick was given the job on a two-year basis in May after impressing as interim manager, but United's football operations chiefs Jason Wilcox and Omar Berrada are considering alternatives. The club wants to avoid repeating the interim process and take a longer-term strategic approach to the role. Sunday's match against Aston Villa at Old Trafford is viewed as key for Carrick's future.

Unai Emery, who was high on United's list, has agreed a new long-term contract with Villa. Other candidates in United's thinking include Julian Nagelsmann, Fabian Hürzeler and Eddie Howe, though no direct contact has been made with any coach. United remain 17th in the Premier League.
