Xabi Alonso sends Estevao message as Chelsea substitutions explained: 'Trust me'

Alonso attributes Estevao's limited minutes to lack of physicality for Premier League intensity, promises opportunities as season progresses.

Estevao was again left on the bench as Chelsea lost to Liverpool 1-1 in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, eliminated after a penalty shootout. The young Brazilian has struggled for minutes since Alonso's arrival despite heavy rotation in recent matches.

Alonso explained the decision at full-time, saying he empathised with Estevao's frustration but was forced into substitutions due to injuries to Maxence Lacroix, Moises Caicedo and Malo Gusto. The manager confirmed Estevao's lack of physicality for English football is behind his limited playing time, noting the Premier League's intensity and that the Brazilian is still in a recovery process following injury.

"Trust me, I'm sure the season is going to be long and Este is going to play his role," Alonso said, promising the forward will get his opportunities as the campaign progresses.
